L Plates
Before you buy them!
- Make sure you have your driving licence which includes correct
entitlement, or provisional licence.
- Take and Pass your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)
Riding on L-Plates
- You can not ride on the road until you your CBT Certificate
- Your CBT Certificate will provided by your instructor having
completed the course to the required level.
- You can only ride a motorcycle without passing a CBT (Compulsory
Basic Training) on private land or at organised events.
Displaying L Plates
- Yes, they are huge - but you still must display them on the front
and rear of your motorcycle or scooter.
- You can ONLY remove your L plates upon successful completion of a full
motorcycle test (or moped test if you ride a moped)
What you can ride
- A MOPED can not exceed 31 mph and does not have an engine over 50cc - You
can ride this at 16 years old with A moped entitlement and CBT Certificate.
- A LEARNER Motorcycle has an engine up to 125cc and a maximum power output
of 11kw - You can ride this at 17 with a motorcycle entitlement.
Where can you ride
- You can NOT ride on motorways either as a learner or on a vehicle under
125cc
Passengers
- Until you have passed your full motorcycle test you are not allowed to
take passengers.
Removing L Plates
- Your CBT is valid for two years, you should take your test before this
date to throw away your L plates. If you do not take your full test within two
years, your licence entitlement will expire.
