Hartside Pass is a popular Biker route in the North of England, pausing at Hartside Top Cafe for a cuppa en route.

Hartside Pass is also known as Hartside Heights or simply Hartside.

Weekends are the most popular times for bikes in this area, Sunday in particular. Although during summer months you are surely going to meet some other bikers up at the Cafe. Police presence can get quite high in the summer months, so watch your speed (and lean angle) through villages.

Its also a popular spot for cyclists and walkers... and sheep - so please stay on the lookout.

Weather is changeable, due to the height and during April, May and October onwards - expect to ride through the clouds!. Also it can get quite windy up there, lots of exposure so watch the weather reports and take appropriate clothing so you don't freeze. Even when its glorious sunshine in Penrith or Hexham - it can be blimin' cold up at the cafe!.

Police do patrol the A686, so take extra care through villages. They will run spot checks and hand out fines and rectification orders if you are riding illegally. Its not unusual to have them radio ahead - so if you think you got off lightly with one copper - just you wait until you see the next one!. So if you don't want to attract attention to yourself ride safely and make sure your bike is legal. We have added a 'bike laws' section to this site, if any of you are unsure.

How to get there

Hartside is on the A686 between Penrith and Alston. Whether you are coming from the North or South, East or West - Be sure to take the full ride from Alston to Penrith.
