renegade says what he thinks about bike parkingMost car parks now have specified motorcycle parking. Secure Car Parks, such as NCP Car Parks - where you take your ticket away with you and can only get out of the car park with that very ticket - are almost ideal.

Pay and Display

Whilst we would hate to condemn the UK Car Park Users, how do you stop someone peeling off the sticky affix ticket in Pay and Display Car Parks that require Motorcyclists to buy a ticket?

The simple answer is that you cant. Unless your bike is super alarmed and goes off when anyone gets close to it. Well, we wont quibble over a 50pence ticket, but one would quibble over a £25 penalty or release fee.

If you really want to back yourself up - take your ticket with you, at least you have proof of purchase and can defend your reasons why you didn't display the ticket as required.

Protest Ride Against Motorcycle Parking Fees

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has organised a protest ride for March 6 against motorcycle parking fees on "The Green" and a total prohibition of bikes on The Promenade in the seaside town of Hunstanton.

"The Green" is a traditional biker meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right but the local council seems bent on keeping riders away.

In March 2003 Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council slapped a ban on bike parking on "The Green" as available space was restricted by building works.

Despite a survey showing 80% of motorcyclists who use "The Green" were against the implementation of a parking fee a £1 charge has now been imposed on riders for 2004, ostensibly to cover the costs of a marshal to control parking.

In a letter to MAG, the tourism manager stated "I am convinced that we need to marshal bike parking on the Green. We therefore have two choices the full ban on bikes or to provide a marshal. I certainly don't want to see the ban back! I can also see no reason why other visitors or our local Council Tax Payers should subsidise motorcyclists. I believe it is reasonable to impose a charge."

Shan Tedder MAG's East Anglia Regional Representative, said, "Motorcyclists have consulted the council and put forward reasoned arguments which have been ignored, hence the protest ride out."

The Protest Ride Out will take place on Saturday 6th March.

Meeting at 12.30pm at: Scania Way, Hardwick Roundabout Kings Lynn and departing at 1.00pm for Hunstanton.
