Introduced in July 1996, the Motorcycle theory test is intended to make new riders think more about
road safety issues and riding attitudes.
From November 2002, an additional test which tests your hazard perception
skills. You need to take both tests in the same sitting, and pass both tests in
order to get your Theory test certificate.
Now it is a requirement that you have taken and passed your motorcycle theory
test PRIOR to taking your road test. The only exception to this is if you
already hold a full car licence.
The Multiple Choice Test
The test consists of 35 questions - and you Must answer at least 30 correctly. They are all multiple choice questions, and mostly common sense.. but some you will have to think twice about!.
You have 40 minutes to complete the test (so you don't need to rush through
them)
The Hazard Perception Test
You will be shown 15 hazards via video clips, The clips have various types
of hazards in them, such as vehicles about to pull out, pedestrians crossing
or doing dangerous things and road conditions. As soon as you spot the hazard
you have to press a button, the quicker you respond the higher your score. The
pass mark is 44 out of 75, and you can score up to 5 per hazard
Preparation
If you have read your highway code, which can be picked up at most good
bookshops, and know your traffic signs (yes all of them) and road markings, and have listened to your instructors advice, then you will know everything you need.
You can also purchase books and CD Roms with sample questions, mock theory tests.
